What is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram, often simply called an echo, is an ultrasound test that takes moving images of the heart using sound waves. Your physician may use this test to evaluate the structure of your heart, as well as check that your heart is working efficiently.
There are different types of echocardiograms. Your doctor will recommend the one that is right for your situation.
The types of echocardiograms are:
- Transthoracic echocardiography
- Stress echocardiography
- Transesophageal echocardiography

There are various instances in which your medical provider may recommend an echocardiogram. Generally, individuals with the following concerns may be candidates for this test:
- Damaged heart valves
- A heart murmur
- Unexplained pains in the chest
- Has had rheumatic fever
- A congenital heart defect
- Has had a heart attack or a stroke
What to Expect During an Echocardiogram
Schedule AppointmentDuring this test, a special probe will be moved around your chest, which emits sound waves that help create a moving picture allowing your healthcare provider to make diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
The test will take approximately one hour to complete.
Your Echocardiogram Results
