What ECG Stress Testing?
An electrocardiogram stress test (also known as stress ECG or treadmill stress test) records the electrical activity of the heart to detect irregularities. It is done to assess the heart’s response to exercise.
More specifically, it provides your doctor with crucial information regarding:
- How you perform during exercise
- If you have any cardiac symptoms that occur during testing
- How your blood pressure and heart rate behave during exercise
- How your heart rate recovers after exercise which has been linked to cardiovascular outcomes
- If there are arrhythmias during exercise which can lead to symptoms and issues in the future
- If there are significant blockages in the arteries that provide blood to your heart

Electrodes will be placed on your chest which are attached to the ECG machine. An initial blood pressure and ECG reading will be taken while you are sitting down and standing up at rest.
You will then be instructed to exercise on a stationary bike or treadmill. Your tracings on the ECG will be supervised and your blood pressure and heart rate will be recorded periodically to see how your heart is responding to the exercise.
The test will take approximately one hour to complete.
