What is a Carotid Ultrasound?
A carotid ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless procedure that uses sound waves to look at the blood flow going through the carotid arteries (on either side of the neck) as well as the thickness of the walls of the carotid artery.
This test can identify plaque buildup that may suggest cardiovascular disease in general and can significantly increase your risk of a stroke.

- Asymptomatic people with known or suspected carotid stenosis
- Asymptomatic people without clinical evidence of atherosclerosis, who also have two or more of the following risk factors: hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoker, family history of ischemic stroke, or family history in a first-degree relative that had atherosclerosis before the age of 60
- Asymptomatic people with carotid bruit
What to Expect from a Carotid Ultrasound
Schedule AppointmentTo start, we’ll apply a clear gel to the neck area and place the ultrasound wand (transducer) on the neck to look at the carotid artery. The sonographer will then gently move the transducer around.
The test will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Results
Once the test is done, we’ll remove the gel, and you can go back to your normal routine immediately. Your Astra Healthcare provider will discuss your results with you once they have been reviewed.
