What is a Stress Echocardiogram?
A stress echocardiogram (also called a stress echo or echo stress test) is an ultrasound test that’s done before and after a period of exercise. The test provides our team with images of how well the heart performs under stress. It can be a highly effective way of diagnosing and monitoring certain heart conditions before and after exercise.

Learn MoreWho is a Good Candidate for a Stress Echocardiogram?
A stress echocardiogram is often used to diagnose coronary artery disease, but it is also used to diagnose or monitor pulmonary hypertension and heart valve disease in patients with certain cardiac symptoms.
Your provider may recommend a stress echocardiogram if you’re exhibiting the following symptoms:
- Chest pain or pressure
- Shortness of breath
What to Expect During Your Stress Echocardiogram
Schedule AppointmentInstructions prior to the test will be sent to you.
An echocardiogram uses ultrasound waves that bounce, or echo, off solid tissue or move through soft tissue. The transducer captures these echoes and then changes them into moving images.
By comparing echocardiogram images under stress with those at rest, your provider can see any changes in muscle function, valve function and pressures.
The test will take approximately one hour and a half to complete.
Results
After your test, an Astra Healthcare provider will review the results and discuss them with you. Based on the results, we may recommend further testing or treatments.
