What is a Coronary CT Angiogram?

A coronary CT angiogram, often abbreviated as CCTA, is a non-invasive imaging test that uses advanced CT technology and contrast dye to create detailed pictures of the arteries of the heart. This test allows your physician to evaluate the existence and exact location of blockages, percent narrowing, and other anatomical abnormalities in the coronary arteries without the need for a traditional catheterization procedure or angiogram.

Who is a Candidate for a Coronary CT Angiogram?

Your provider may recommend a coronary CT angiogram for a variety of reasons. Generally, individuals with the following concerns may be candidates for this test:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Unexplained shortness of breath
  • Abnormal or inconclusive cardiac stress test results
  • Intermediate risk of coronary artery disease
  • A family history of premature coronary artery disease
  • Evaluation of the heart’s anatomy before a cardiac procedure

What to Expect During a Coronary CT Angiogram

During this test, you will lie on your back on the CT scanner table. Contrast dye is injected through an IV to enhance the visibility of the coronary arteries. You may also be given medication to slow your heart rate, which helps produce clearer images. You will be asked to hold your breath briefly while the images are captured.

The test will take approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

There are also options available (CLEERLY and HEARTFLOW) to evaluate the plaque composition and its hemodynamic consequence on blood flow by using highly specialized software. These are additional services that need to be requested prior to the scan itself.
