What is Alzheimer’s PET Imaging?
Alzheimer’s PET imaging is an advanced brain scan that helps detect beta-amyloid plaques, one of the hallmark features of Alzheimer’s disease. At Astra Healthcare, we use FDA-approved tracers such as Amyvid and Vizamyl to create detailed images that help physicians evaluate initial stages of cognitive decline and assess for amyloid buildup in the brain.
This scan is often used as part of a larger evaluation. It does not stand alone as the only way to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease, but it can provide valuable information that helps guide diagnosis and treatment planning.
Who is a Candidate for Alzheimer’s PET Imaging?
Your provider may recommend Alzheimer’s PET imaging if you are starting to experience memory loss, cognitive decline, or other symptoms that may be related to dementia. It may also be helpful when a diagnosis is unclear, when amyloid buildup needs to be confirmed or ruled out, or when results are needed to help determine eligibility for certain Alzheimer’s treatments.
What to Expect During the Scan
During the test, a small amount of radioactive tracer is injected through an IV. After a short waiting period, you will lie on the PET scanner table while images are taken of your brain. It is important to remain still during the scan so that clear images can be captured.
The entire appointment typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes.
Your Results
After your scan, a board-certified radiologist will review the images and prepare a report for your referring physician. Your provider will then discuss the results with you and explain any recommended next steps.
