What Are At-Home Sleep Studies?
Sleep apnea is a condition when breathing is disrupted, it can lower the blood oxygen levels and harm the heart over time by putting too much stress on it.
According to the American Heart Association, sleep apnea increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and can lead to worse outcomes. Obstructive sleep apnea, in particular, has been linked to higher rates of high blood pressure, stroke, and coronary artery disease. There’s also evidence that sleep apnea can cause left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, which increases the risk of heart failure.
When breathing is disrupted at night, it can lower the blood oxygen levels and harm the heart over time by putting too much stress on it. It can also increase blood pressure and change your heart rate. People with OSA have a higher risk of death from heart attack, and many people with heart failure also have sleep apnea.
More specifically, diagnosing and treating sleep apnea can help patients with the following heart conditions:
- Hypertension
- Atrial Fibrillation
- Arrhythmias
- Coronary Artery Disease
- Heart Failure

Learn MoreWhat to Expect From An At-Home Sleep Study
Schedule AppointmentAn at-home sleep study is relatively simple. When you come in for your appointment, we’ll show you how to use and wear the sleep study equipment. We’ll also walk you through how to take care of it and some instructions on when to bring it back.
A very simple device will be placed on your finger and wrist to monitor you overnight.
A device will also be attached to you during the night to register your sleep, heart rate, blood oxygen, and breathing.
When you bring the kit home, you’ll put all the equipment on when you’re ready for bed and try to sleep as normally as possible.
Results
Once you return your at-home sleep study kit, we’ll review the test findings, and then an Astra Healthcare provider who is board-certified in sleep medicine will discuss them with you and provide you with recommendations.
